From Classroom to Production Line

In March, we welcomed Sam to London Electronics for a work placement as part of his Intermediate Engineering Level 3 qualification at Bedford College. Like many engineers at the start of their journey, Sam’s interest began with something simple. A hands-on lesson at school.
“I was interested in DT and really enjoyed the practical side. I wanted to take that further and engineering felt like the right next step.”
That decision has now brought him onto the production floor, working on real products used in demanding industrial environments.
During his placement, Sam has been working directly with our production team, developing practical skills that go far beyond the classroom. His work has included soldering components onto PCBs and supporting the assembly of our FUSION large display systems, including the latest FUSION 5 Series.
Getting Hands-On with Real Engineering
This isn’t theory. It’s real engineering, where precision matters and every component has a purpose.
One of the biggest shifts during a placement like this is moving from understanding concepts to applying them. Sam has been developing his soldering skills, but more importantly, gaining a deeper understanding of PCBA construction and how individual components contribute to the performance of a finished system. That kind of knowledge only really sticks when you’re doing the work yourself.
Ask anyone in engineering what keeps them hooked, and it usually comes down to one thing. Seeing something work. For Sam, that moment has already landed.
“Getting to test and calibrate units has been the best part. Taking a pile of assemblies and turning it into a finished product, seeing it work first time and knowing I built it… that’s something I’m proud of.”
That’s the shift from learning to ownership. And it’s where real confidence starts to build.
Looking Ahead
Sam’s next step is clear. He wants to continue building on what he’s started.
“Hopefully I can move into a full-time role, keep developing my skills and grow my career within the company.”
And that’s exactly what placements like this are about. Not just giving students experience, but creating a genuine pathway into industry. Here at London Electronics, we see placements as more than just a short-term opportunity. They’re a way to invest in the future of engineering.
Giving people like Sam the chance to work on real products, solve real problems and contribute to real outcomes doesn’t just benefit them. It strengthens the industry as a whole.
Because the best engineers aren’t just taught. They’re built through experience.
